A Guide for Flossing During Invisalign Treatment

Man flossing his teeth.

If you’re someone who wears Invisalign and isn’t especially diligent about flossing daily, you may want to rethink your habits. It’s true that it takes discipline to wear and take care of your clear aligners every day, but don’t put your oral hygiene on the backburner. It’s especially important that you brush and floss every day while undergoing Invisalign treatment.

Read on for some helpful tips for flossing with Invisalign.

Tip #1: Make a Routine of It

Most people brush their teeth in the morning and before bed. Pairing flossing with your nighttime oral hygiene routine increases your chances of successfully making it a habit.

Not only are you adding it to an existing practice, but flossing at night is an ideal time since you can clean away the day’s food particles and bacteria that your toothbrush can’t reach and go to bed with a clean mouth.

It’s recommended to floss at least once a day, but flossing after every meal with Invisalign is ideal. Even if you brush your teeth every time after you eat, you’re trapping the bacteria between your teeth under your aligner in a moist environment. In other words, the perfect breeding ground for bacteria!

Tip #2: Find a Flossing Method That Works for You

Traditional dental floss is an effective way to clean between your teeth. Gently guide the floss between your teeth and curve it around each tooth, moving it up and down along the sides. Avoid snapping the floss into your gums.

The most effective method is one you’ll use consistently. Try different types of floss to find the one that glides between your teeth easily. Consider a water flosser if it’s easier for you.

Tip #3: Pack a Small Travel Kit

As previously mentioned, brushing and flossing after every meal is important for avoiding tooth decay and gum disease, making a travel kit essential to carry with you to school or work.

Create a small kit that will hold your aligners, a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss picks, and mouthwash. After you’re done eating, store your aligner in the kit and head to the nearest restroom to brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash.

Not only will you have nice, fresh breath, but you can relax knowing that you’re keeping your Invisalign treatment on track by practicing good oral hygiene.

Invisalign can help you achieve a straighter smile, but maintaining healthy teeth and gums should remain a priority throughout treatment. With the right technique and a consistent routine, flossing can easily become a regular part of your Invisalign treatment.
